ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Vikings are set to release QB Donovan McNabb on Thursday.
We've seen speculation on this ever since the Broncos granted Kyle Orton his release. McNabb will be subject to the waivers process with $1.5 million remaining on his 2011 salary. He would certainly have interest in playing for his hometown Bears, who have a higher waiver claim than the Texans.
Listen, I know McNabb played terrible in the first 5 games of the season for the Vikings. And Caleb Hanie certainly deserves one more shot this Sunday to prove he is a quality quarterback. But this game is a must win, and so are the games vs the Broncos and the Seahawks. We must win these games.
So for that reason alone, I think the reward of signing McNabb outweighs the risk. Donovan knows his next chance is his last chance. He knows his days are numbered. And I think athletes that have done it before and have something to prove can be valuable assets.
He won't throw for 300 yds anymore but he might be able to win a road game in the playoffs. Something I can't see Hanie doing.
Donovan still has the ability to manage a game and all he or Hanie really has to do is limit the turnovers and somehow get us 17-24 pts per game for us to finish 10-6 or even 11-5.
Bottom line is: for 1.5 million I'd sign pretty much anyone who can help us, even in the slightest bit. The risk is low and the opportunity for a quality veteran qb doesn't come around often. couch *Josh McCown* cough.
